Since originally joining the yearbook staff as a writer, I was not introduced to design until my second year on staff as a section editor. However, since my first introduction to the field, I have been avid to learn the ins and outs of design. I don't like keeping my designs simple to a template. I would rather make designs eye catching, which has led me to expand my knowledge of design into Photoshop and InDesign. Since being awarded the position of Editor-in-Chief, my knowledge of design has expanded more than ever as it is my job to edit and lead all designs before they are sent off, along with creating templates for the whole book. While I started off as a writer, my expertise in the journalism world has expanded far beyond that.
Branching out
This full page spread was published in our 2018 yearbook covering the horticulture classes at our school. I decided to take a creative take to this page, developing a special effect on the main picture rather than solely having pictures of kids shoveling and planting in our school's garden. This spread won the 2018 First Place Spread Design award granted by SCSPA.
Parisian Style
As a writer in my first year, this spread was my first attempt at designing a page for the 2018 yearbook. I was assigned to cover the fashion classes at Wando, but after beginning this project I found out that fashion classes were not being offered in the 2017-2018 school year. With the editors wanting to keep a fashion page, I sought out aspiring fashion designers and covered models at our school, specifically those who participated in the premier event of Charleston Fashion Week.
Senior hall of fame
Each year, around 24 seniors are recognized for their extraordinary work and character within their class. For the 2019 book, I came up with the idea to use colored lights for these individual portraits to play into this years theme of "Shine On". I orchestrated the pictures on top of designing the spreads and editing the stories on them. There are a total of 6 spreads throughout the book using this same template highlighting the graduating class' best and brightest.
End sheet
This spread is the end sheet for the 2019 Legend yearbook. To go along with the theme of "Shine On", we created a neon sign effect through Adobe Photoshop.
Summer divider
For the 2019 Legend yearbook, I designed the summer divider using photoshop to continue the picture into the title. For each divider we provide a word that relates to the theme of "Shine On." For each divider I also wrote the copy, maintaining a story that relates to the season. This spread won Best in Show Yearbook divider at the Southern Interscholastic Press Association Convention.
Title page
The 2019 title page for the Legend yearbook. This was also intended to pertain to the theme of "Shine On." This title page won an Award of Merit under the Yearbook Title Page section at the Southern Interscholastic Press Association Convention.
people divider
For the 2019 Legend yearbook, I designed the people dividers using photoshop to create a glowing effect around each individual to pertain to the "Shine On" theme. Below is an example of one of the four dividers used throughout the portrait section.
2019 Legend cover
This is the cover I designed for the 2019 Legend yearbook. The aspects of light on this cover glow in the dark and provide to the theme of "Shine On." For this blended effect I used a picture of the sunset I had taken and messed it with a picture of our local lighthouse using Photoshop to enhance the stars. This cover won Best in Convention at the 2019 Southern Interscholastic Press Association Convention.
Spring DIVIDer
For the 2019 Legend yearbook, I designed the spring divider using photoshop to continue the picture into the title. For each divider we provide a word that relates to the theme of "Shine On." For each divider I also wrote the copy, maintaining a story that relates to the season. This story was on a junior baseball player who broke both of his wrists within a span of a single season.
"Shine on" Theme Opener
To display the Shine On theme of the 2019 Legend yearbook, I orchestrated a long exposure picture to use aspects of light to represent shining on. I wrote the copy for this spread and designed the layout. This theme opener won an Award of Merit at the the 2019 Southern Interscholastic Press Association Convention.
"SHIne On" Theme Closer
To mirror the Shine On theme opener, I created a theme closer where instead of headlights streaming into the distance, there were taillights. I created the spread layout and copy written on the spread.
Winter Divider
For the 2019 Legend yearbook, I designed the winter divider using photoshop to continue the picture into the title. For each divider we provide a word that relates to the theme of "Shine On." For this divider I took the picture, wrote the copy, and designed the page. The story is on a young ice skater who faced tribulations from an injury she received in the sport.
Colophon
The colophon is the last page to appear in the 2019 yearbook. I took the picture featuring a sunset over the Charleston Harbor and designed the page.
Autumn divider
For the 2019 Legend yearbook, I designed the autumn divider using photoshop to continue the picture into the title. For this divider I took the picture, wrote the copy, and designed the page. The story is on a Wando High School Spanish teacher whose house was destroyed in a hurricane that formulated off of the coast.
